While configuring remote extensions for Synapse Server, this checklist will help you.

Configuration of Synapse Remote Extensions is needed when Synapse Server is at one location and there are some remote extensions needed to be configured at the remote locations.

Then the remote branch does not have many users, then this configuration helps. The server at the HO will have the extensions that at configured at the remote end. This way, one server can fulfil telephony requirements for offices more than one location.

This kind of a setup will require the following:

  1. Static IP for server at HO: The static Ip can be configured directly at the server or the router.

  2. Bandwidth: Stable Internet Bandwidth of atleast 1 Mbps download and upload. One call consumes 80 Kbps.

A sample setup may look like this.

Configuration checklist at Synapse Server Location (HO)

  1. Synapse Server must have a public IP assigned directly, or public IP assigned to the router.

  2. Disable the default firewall in the router.

  3. Incase the public IP is assigned to the Router, make sure the Synapse server IP is configured for DMZ or Port Forward.

  4. Enable ports 5060 to 5080 & 8000 to 20000 TCP & UDP Both on the router.

  5. Port forwarding or DMZ configuration is needed only if public IP is assigned to the router.

  6. If public IP is assigned to the Synapse Server through a LAN switch, no port forwarding configuration needs to be done.

  7. On softphone, eg Zoiper, configure extension 101 with its password and Synapse Server IP as the local IP is 192.168.1.101, since the local network is 192.168.1.0 network.

  8. Once the extension gets registered, calls can be made and received.

Configuration checklist at remote location (Branch 2)

The remote location need not have a Public IP assigned to the router.

This location does not have an Enjay Synapse Mini Router.

  1. In the router, disable firewall if any.

  2. From any PC, check ping to the HO synapse Server public IP. Make a note of the response time. Response time of 100 ms is OK. Any value higher than this may affect voice quality

  3. Configure Zoiper or other IP softphone, with Synapse Server public IP and the extension number and password.

  4. Make sure proper sound devices are selected in the Softphone configuration.

  5. Make a call to an extension configured at the HO premises, and test voice quality. Also, have a test call from the HO to the remote extension.

  6. Additionally, you can try a test call from the remote extension to your mobile phone and test voice quality.

  7. In any PC, configure Zoiper, and extension 112, with password, and Synapse Server Public IP  - 112.112.112.112

  8. Once registered, you will be able to communicate with any extension of HO

Configuration at Branch 1

Synapse Server IP - 110.110.110.110 - This IP could be configured directly on SYnapse Server or on Router.

If IP configured on Synapse Server , then:

  1. During configuration of Synapse Server, configure IAX trunks for Synapse Server at HO. Thil will need Synapse Server at HO to have a Public IP.

  2. Configure Softphone with extension 201 and password, and Local IP address of Synapse Server.

  3. Once registered, calls can be made to Synapse Extensions on HO

To be able to access Synapse Server GUI from remote location, enable port forwarding for port number 80 to Synapse Server.

For Remote hosted software to be able to connect to Synapse Server, port 5038 needs to be forwarded to Synapse Server.

Run a ping test between Remote location and Synapse Server.

The ping reply should be at approx 70 ms.

For an extension to be registered remotely, the remote network should have a continuous connectivity to Enjay Synapse Server. Unstable connectivity or latency can result in extension not registering, voice problems from one or both end points.

To be able to access Synapse Server GUI from remote location, enable port forwarding for port number 80 to Synapse Server.

For Remote hosted software to be able to connect to Synapse Server, port 5038 needs to be forwarded to Synapse Server.
